Two Stargate: SG1 movies coming

MGM’s officially announced that there will be two Stargate: SG1 movies coming following the show’s last season on the Sci-Fi channel. Based on the synopsis for the first movie, it sounds like the currently Ori storyline is going to be wrapped up with the movie and not with the end of the current TV season. No indication yet on when the movies will be coming out or where on TV fans will be able to see it.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) announced today the extension of the hit Stargate SG-1 franchise with two movies based on the popular series. Titled Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, the movies will both be made available to the television universe and home entertainment marketplace by MGM.

“Stargate: The Ark of Truth”

As SG-1 searches for an Ancient artifact which they hope can defeat the armies of the Ori, they learn more Ori ships are about to be sent through the supergate to launch a final assault on Earth. Daniel discovers that the artifact, the Ark of Truth, may be in the Ori home galaxy, and SG-1 embarks aboard the Odyssey to find it, and pre-empt the attack. The IOA has a plan of their own and SG-1 ends up in a distant galaxy fighting two powerful enemies.

“Stargate: Continuum”

While SG-1 attends the execution of Ba’al, the last of the goa’uld system lords, Teal’c and Vala inexplicably disappear into thin air. Carter, Daniel and Mitchell race back to a world where history has been changed: the Stargate program has been erased from the timeline. As they try to convince the authorities what’s happened, a fleet of goa’uld motherships arrives in orbit, led by Ba’al, his queen, Katesh, (Vala) and his first prime, Teal’c. SG-1 must find the Stargate and set things right before the world is enslaved by the goa’uld.

Local Irish pub overrun by blogger horde

Now there’s a good headline.

There was a good sized turnout for tonight’s gathering which made it very cozy and fun. I think there were maybe about 18 or so people there. I got there a little late (at least I can say I wasn’t the last one there…Jared wins that honour) and was surprised at just how many people were there. Madra Rua turned out to be an excellent gathering place that I’ll have to go back to because they were out of fish & chips when I got there (disappointing). Hopefully we didn’t run the waitress too ragged tonight.

It was nice to see a few new faces there tonight. Got to meet Dave Moulton (who’s blog I’ve been enjoying reading lately), Josh from Today’s Special and Microbial Lab Pam. We even had a frequent commenter (can he be called a blogger groupie?) show up for the gathering. Looking forward to the podcast Geoff ends up making with his interviews from tonight too.

Many eyes were glued to the TV watching the Patriots/Chargers game, which the Patriots ended up winning by a field goal much to Jared’s dismay.

Thanks to Heather for putting tonight’s gathering together. It was great seeing everyone again!

Update: Joan and Chuck have pictures up. Silly me forgot the camera in the car again this time.

Review: Night at the Museum

Last night the wife and I went to see Night at the Museum. I wasn’t expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. Funny movie, interesting story and pretty cool CGI. I couldn’t decide which character made the show most enjoyable for me: the bone-fetching T. Rex or Attilla the Hun. Ben Stiller puts his usual decent performance dealing, but if you’re expecting a slapstick funny performance from Robin Williams, you might be a little disappointed. He does put in a pretty good show as a wax Teddy Roosevelt though.

Review: Eragon

I haven’t read the book, and have no plans to either. The story behind Eragon is a pretty standard one among the fantasy genre, and as a result isn’t terribly original. The dragon characteristics are pretty much taken from Anne McAffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series (although I did think feathers on a dragon was a little odd), and there are other familiar elements to the story. Plot and character wise, it’s pretty cookbook. CGI work on the dragon was well done. Monsters and goons could have been done better. You get the impression that most of the FX budget went to the CGI effects, leaving not much for goon costumes and makeup. Jeremy Irons puts in a good performance, and John Malkovich is pretty good as the villain.

Kids will probably enjoy this movie more than adults, particularly if they’re fans of the book and can overlook the parts of the book that were probably left out of the movie.

Irish pub invaded by bloggers!

Maybe I should save that title for Monday’s post…

Looks like there will be a pretty good turnout for tomorrow’s blogger gathering at Madra Rua. I’ve never been there before, but I’m told it’s pretty good. I’m counting on a decently poured Guiness tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting up with everyone again.

In the meantime, there is plenty for me to do this weekend. Stuff to do in the garage, dog class for Simba, revisions to make on the paper I submitted among other things. There’s also some blogging I need to catch up on too.

Definitely more later.
