Am I being southified?

Every now and then, during one of the many internal conversations I have with the various entities inhabiting my brain, I’m stopped mid-stream shocked and horrified as I catch myself using terms like “y’all” and other bits of Southern slang.

I don’t think I’ve ever caught myself using it talking with real people yet, but the prospect of me inadvertently blurting out something like that frightens me.

I wonder if my friends will think my ‘accent’ has changed any since I last saw them.

  1. he hee!
I can’t wait to hear you speaking and see if you have indeed picked up a bit of a drawl or accent. Somehow it is hard to imaging you saying things like “y’all” or “where yous at?”. I put the blame squarely on joe.

  2. Last time I saw you were pretty hammered. Any comprehension issues that I had were more to do with your slurred speech than your accent.
And, I’m shocked to say that it probably is Joey’s fault.

  3. I consider myself bilingual now – I can say “eh” and “y’all” in the same sentence 🙂

  4. Don’t feel too bad. LOL I moved around a lot growing up so when I lived in the North and the West, I was teased for the way I said certain words. When I moved back down here to Charleston, I had virtually no accent to those that have always lived here. My Northern and Western friends pick up on my Southern accent and don’t believe me when I say it could be worse. LOL
I think it’s all about living in an environment. You’re here in the south so it’s inevitable you’ll pick up our slang. Just like when I lived in the North and West, I picked up their slang.
When I spoke to you at the blog meeting in West Ashley, I didn’t notice any type of accent.
And what do you mean, “I don’t think I’ve ever caught myself using it talking with real people yet,” Are we not real people here in the south?! LOL Just kidding. I know exactly what you’re saying.
