Wifi router antennas

I thought I’d see what I got out of EZNEC for modeling the three antennas on the wifi router. I treated each of them as single wires at 2.452 GHz about 1m off the ground (not the floor). Each wire was 8 cm long (0.654 lambda) spaced 8 cm apart. Radiation pattern is directed perpendicularly to the plane containing the antennas, so I have two of them pointed down (the wifi router is mounted to the side of the desk) and one pointed off to the side (there’s a power strip that gets in the way of it pointing down like the others)

After reading through some of the original documentation for NEC learning about the somewhat arcane input format (like MCNP, it can be pretty confusing at first), I’m liking how EZNEC simplifies and hides some of the complexity, but is still accessible if needed. When I start getting into building antennas, I might have to get a copy of it.

Into the new office

There’s some re-arranging going on in the house these days. Finally moving the computer and associated gear back out of the bedroom again and turning one of the rooms into an office/ham shack. The weekend was spent taking the computer apart, cleaning off the layers of accumulated dust and moving everything into the red room.

Getting the computer back up and running was fortunately uneventful, and there were no casualties.

With the new desk location, the pegboard holding all the gadgets is going to need some re-configuring before it goes back on the desk. I’ll end up having some cables running along the floor that I’ll have to cover up, but it’s kind of unavoidable.

It’s not quite the arrangement I had originally envisioned, mostly due to the location of the telephone jack, but it will work for now.

blog.AB4UG.net

In preparation for archiving this blog to start fresh, I started up a new blog over at http://blog.ab4ug.net/ where I think I’ll post most of my electronics and amateur radio adventures.

It’s a vanilla MovableType 5.2 set up right now. Nothing fancy, but functional. The archives here at Imablog will stay and I’ll probably start over with a new MT5.2 install and database. Still mulling something Drupal-y though. Haven’t quite decided yet.

I’ll probably cross-post material at the AB4UG blog here also so that nobody feels left out.

Broken comments (again)

I’ve been getting reports from people that they’re getting a mangled response page after posting/attempting to post comments (not that there are a lot of them to begin with).
I’m not entirely sure what’s going on but given the age of the blog, it’s possible there’s something messed up in the database.

I’ve had on my TODO list for a while now to restart the blog using a fresh MT5 install, fresh DB and republishing what’s in the current blog into an archive folder.

What’s that you say? Just use WordPress?

Well, I suppose I could. All the cool kids seem to be doing it. I’ve also given some though to creating a Drupal based thing where I could include other non-blog type content.

Maybe I’ll take this opportunity to do drink more of the Drupal Kool-Aid.

In the meantime, feel free to leave a comment on my Facebook page (blog posts get crosposted there) or Google+ page, send me a tweet, or just email me.

Back to MovableType?

MovableType 5.2 is almost out. From what I’ve seen on the MT and ProNet mailing lists, 5.2 is a pretty good release.

A while ago I moved the blog over to the OpenMelody, the OS fork of MT 4. With activity on the OpenMelody project slowing down and seemingly heading into dormancy, I’ve been giving some thought to moving back to MT. It will take some planning, but I think there shouldn’t be too many problems, except maybe for the archives. For some reason the archives always break.
