Linux desktop plunge

With Fedora 7, I decided to take the plunge and go Linux for my work desktop.

Should be a fun experiment. Already got printers added, email set up and connections to my other servers in place. About the only significant problems I’m anticipating are getting some of my spreadsheets converted over to OpenOffice. I think there are a few that use Excel-specific features that I’ll have to work around. It’s going to be a slow process that’s just going to take some time.

I’m liking what I’ve got going so far.

Fedora 7

Installed Fedora 7 on the two computers sitting on my desk at work today.

I haven’t had a chance to play with it much yet, but I like the new installation process using the Fedora Live CD. Only one CD image to download and burn as opposed to the 5 for FC 4-6. Of course that means you can’t install all the packages you want initially, but they’re easy enough to afterwards. The install goes much faster though. There’s always the DVD image you can use too, which I’m sure is much more complete.

Unfortunately, I won’t get to play with it a whole lot until after next week.

Multiple home pages in Firefox

Don’t know if this is a new feature in the Firefox 3 nightlies or if it’s just some obscure feature in Firefox that I never knew about, but apparently you can have multiple home pages open up when you hit the home icon or when your browser starts up.

Tools/Options/Main – type in or copy/paste the URLs you want to open up separated with a pipe (|). Or open up the pages you want to set as home pages in separate tabs and click the ‘Use current pages’ button.

It’s pretty neat.

Fixed auto-save

Tracked the problem with the Auto-save plugin to a browser issue. I suppose that’s what you get when you’re on the bleeding edge with Firefox nightlies.

Thanks to a fix from Patrick, the plugin works once again, although given the nature of the nightly builds, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up breaking again later on.

But for now it works and I’m liking it.

Broken auto-save

Been using the Auto-Save plugin by Patrick Benny for a little while now. It was pretty cool when I first installed it, but for some reason now it just times out when the auto-save kicks in for the first time. The entry still gets saved by MT, but the browser doesn’t seem to get any notification of it. If the entry is saved before the first auto-save attempt kicks off, then the plugin works fine.

Just another thing I need to dig into that I think may have been related to the server upgrade. I’ll get to it one of these days.
