CREATESouth 2011

Had a good time at today’s CREATESouth. Got to meet up with friends, eat some tasty BBQ and sit in on some good sessions.

Attendance seemed to be pretty good this year with a lot of new faces.

Lunch by Andre Pope and Proud Purveyors of Pork was excellent as usual. I even managed to win some of their sauces and rub. Looking forward to trying it out on the two Boston butts in my freezer.

Serving up some BBQ

First session of the afternoon was the Photography Hacks session by Kreg Steppe. He went over a few simple little hacks and gadgets that could be done pretty easily and inexpensively. The coffee filter gray card for setting the white balance was pretty nifty.

Next session was one on building mobile apps. Didn’t go into too much depth, but introduced a few interesting looking tools and suggestions. A good session for whetting the appetite.

The last session I went to was Homebrew 101. Although I doubt I’ll ever get into brewing my own beer (just not that heavy a beer drinker) it was interesting to see everything that goes into the process.

There was one more session and then the after party, but it was time for me to leave so I could get back to the dogs. A great day and I got to learn something at each session I went to.

CREATESouth is looking for new volunteers to help with organizing next year’s event. If you’re interested, sign up! It’s a great event to be involved in.

Objective: Get my copy of Home-Ec 101 autographed by the author.

SHDH CHS

Today’s SHDH Charleston gathering was another good gathering of the dev geeks with around 17 people or so showing up.

The afternoon was filled with active discussion and collaboration over different projects, talking over ideas and concepts. There was talk about recommendation systems, streaming video to Android devices, POSSCON and other conferences and other miscellaneous topics.

I spent most of my time working on some utilities to help me massage and manage some of the mesh data generated by MCNP until the battery in my laptop died. Spent the rest of the afternoon just hanging out, reading more about Gnuplot and chatting with the others.

Had a good time at the second SHDH. Looking forward to the next one.

CSCLRC Supported Entry 2011

The first day of this year’s Charleston Kennel Club dog show had some excellent weather for the first time in the 5 years I’ve been going. This year the show was smaller than last year. Not as many people or dogs as there were in past years. Still a lot of fun today.

Dog show weather

It looks like for the first time since I’ve been going, there will actually be nice weather for this year’s Charleston Kennel Club dog show! Weather normally isn’t an issue for the regular dogs, but the CSCLRC part of the show has always been outside (at least as long as I’ve been going). The labs don’t never really seem to mind the weather and the handlers just dress appropriately. You don’t really see a lot of the primping and preening with the labs that you see with the other dogs inside.

Weather should be nice today hitting 17°C later this afternoon. The ground hasn’t been turned into a soggy muddy mess from being soaked by rain the previous night. There’s no rain in the forecast for the weekend.

This should be a great weekend for a dog show!

SuperHappyDevHouse Charleston

The inaugural SuperHappyDevHouse Charleston meeting went on today with about 15 or so people working on various things. I’m not really much of a programmer, so I mostly went to hang out and see what other people were doing. I also used it as an opportunity to finally get my Galileoscope assembled.
