Heading out to on the annual pilgrimage to DragonCon in a few days.
This will be my 4th DC, and this year I’ll be marching in the parade with a few other friends. Excited about that. It will be fun seeing the parade from the other side.
DRAGON*CON!
Saturn V Immensity
I’ve mentioned it before. The Saturn V is a big big rocket. Until you see it in person though, it’s really hard to imagine just how big it is. Then, when you do see it, your mind is boggled that they actually worked and sent people into Earth/lunar orbit and to land on the moon.
Eleven times.
And then you wonder why we haven’t kept doing it.
BarcampCHS 4 planning
BarcampCHS 4 is going to be held November 10, 2012 most likely at the College of Charleston once again.
Planning for the 4th BarcampCHS is underway and things seem to be rolling along nicely so far. If you want to participate in the planning, we’re currently meeting every other week. Watch the BarcampCHS Facebook page or BarcampCHS Google+ page for additional information and updates.
We’re currently looking for sponsors and have a number of sponsorship levels available. Contact the organizers if you’re interested in becoming a BarcampCHS sponsor!
It’s also not too early to propose a session you want to present, or that you’d like to see presented. Visit the sessions page to see the current list of sessions and suggest/propose a session!
Cannons at Charlestowne Landing
Did you know that cannons get fired off at Charlestowne Landing the third Saturday of each month?
It’s part of their interpretive program. Here’s one of the “smaller” Saker guns being fired.
Cannon firings happen at 1, 2 and 3PM. If you catch the 1 or 2PM cannon firings, you can wander down to the Adventure for a while and then make it back in time for the next cannon firing.
Free Comic Book Day
My comic book days are long past, but I decided to go to Free Comic Book Day at Soundwave Movies and Music up in Summerville and meet up with fellow Trek and Dragon*Con geek Erika. A bit of a drive but hey, just another excuse to procrastinate, right? And there’s Madra Rua just down the block.
Comics have gotten a lot more expensive since I last bought any.
Soundwave is a little store with about half devoted to comics and the other half to DVDs and CDs. Still bigger than the mall kiosk booths that most comic places were when I was collecting. All of the people there seemed like regulars. Friendly place. Might be a place I’d visit more often if I was closer.
Most of the titles were familiar, and seeing Alpha Flight resurrected made it very tempting to get back into comics again.
I may have to see about getting the two boxes of comics I still have stashed at home shipped to me (I think they’re still there anyway).
After, we went off to Madra Rua and met up with Heather and had a great time hanging out. I can proudly say there was hardcore nerd table action going on.
