BarcampCHS 2013 registration

It’s that time of year again, when geeks of all kinds gather to share what they know at BarcampCHS!

This year is the fifth incarnation of BarcampCHS and with your support and attendance (and presentations!) it can be yet another wildly successful event!

Head on over to the BarcampCHS website to purchase your ticket, then start planning the presentation you’re going to share with everyone else there!

Hooligan Fireworks Safety Tips

On this 4th of July, it seemed fitting to pull this entry out of the Houseboat Hooligan archives. Hope everybody has a fun and safe 4th of July!

  • Fireworks should not be used while drunk
  • If you insist on using fireworks while drunk, do not hold them in your hand
  • If you insist on using fireworks while drunk and holding them in your hand, hold them right side up so that it shoots into the air
  • Fireworks should not be set off on top of a gas laden houseboat. Roman candles in particular should be held so they fire into the air, not into the houseboat

Wedding special event station

As part of the wedding festivities, Connie and I decided it would be fun to get on the radio for a special event the morning of wedding day (July 19).

We don’t have a special event call sign and are just going to operate on the radio using our regular call signs (AB4UG and NR4CB).

We’re only going to be on the radio for a couple hours (band and frequency pending, but anywhere between 40m to 6m but not 30m) from 11AM-1PM EDT (1500-1700 UTC). We’ll be self-spotting ourselves on Twitter, so follow me (@imabug) or Connie (@NR4CB) to find us. We’ll also use the #CQMahWedding and #WATwitter hash tags. We’ll stay in the general portion of 40m-12m and in the tech portion of the 10m band so that everybody will be able to join in the fun. If you’re near the radio, tune in and work us!

We’ll also make some QSL cards using some of the wedding photos so if you’d like to get one, send us a card.

Southeast Linuxfest 2013 photos

It’s taken me a few days to get to, but I finally found some time to go through the nearly 500 photos I took at Southeast Linuxfest 2013. First pass took it down to around 420 photos, and then trimmed it down to 406 photos that I uploaded to my gallery. I’ll make a few more passes to pick out the good ones that will get posted to Flickr eventually.

Shay Walters made a few of these wood SELF 2013 logos using a laser cutter. Pretty cool.

Saturday’s party with MC Frontalot was a fun time.

Check out the rest of the photos over in the gallery. A subset of these will end up in the Southeast Linuxfest Flickr group. If you have photos from Southeast Linuxfest you’d like to share, feel free to post them there too.

CHarleston Uber Users Group (CHUUG)

There’s a new tech user group in Charleston, and they’re called CHUUG (CHarleston Über Users Group).

One problem that many tech user groups in Charleston suffer from is that their focus tends to be narrow (Ruby, Java, etc), which means fairly small membership and after a while, a lack of topics. I’ve seen more than a few groups around here start up, develop a good following and then fizzle out after a few months.

CHUUG was formed to combat this problem by being tech-agnostic and offer the local tech community a place to discuss, share and learn from their peers. The focus is pretty much anything and everything tech related.

If it’s tech, geek, maybe even nerdy, it’s ok

Everybody is welcome to attend. Talks and discussions tend to be fairly high level requiring some knowledge, but that’s the whole point of the group. The first few meetings have been conducted barcamp style, with people pitching ideas they’d be willing to talk about, or want to learn about and then breaking out into smaller groups around those ideas.

CHUUG meets on the second Thursday of the month at 6PM at Jack Russell Software (494 Wando Park Blvd).

You can find CHUUG on Google+ and the #chuug IRC channel on freenode.

If CHUUG makes you think of beer, there’s that too.
