Time to root the phone?

On one of my quasi-regular checks of the T-Mobile forums for the Galaxy S2, I noticed that the Android Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade was released almost 2 years ago. There were some indications that Samsung might release Jelly Bean (4.2) for the Galaxy S2 later on, but now I think it’s pretty much given that the S2 will be stuck at ICS 4.1.2 and the only way I’m going to get anything higher is to root the phone and install a custom ROM myself.

My Transformer Prime is in the same boat. Its last update was a year ago and looks like it will be stuck at ICS 4.1.1. It’s a shame. I was under the impression that ASUS’ long term support was better than most manufacturers.

I guess my next project will be learning about the whole process and finding a JB ROM or higher that will work on the phone and tablet.

Planet of the Apes

I was watching Planet of the Apes last night on Netflix and despite having seen it countless times before, I only just noticed this during the tribunal scene.

Off to Edmonton

Heading back to Edmonton tomorrow on hopefully existing flights that will be uneventful. I should probably start packing or something like that.

So far the only things on my itinerary are wings with the guys (Wednesday at Brewster’s Pub) and dinner with my former grad school supervisor on an as-yet unspecified date.

Aside from visiting the parents, finding a place to eat dim sum (shouldn’t be hard) and wandering around my old stomping grounds, I think I’m going to keep things pretty open.

Haven’t decided yet if I’m going to bring my HT with me. I’ll probably leave the laptop at home and just bring my phone and tablet loaded up with reading material.

No Dragon*Con this year

My social media streams are filled with people posting about Dragon*Con now, and I imagine it will be for at least the next few weeks.

I’ll be skipping DC this year and travelling back home to Edmonton instead the following week. Feelings about missing DC are kind of mixed. On the one hand, I’m going to miss not being there. It’s always exciting to see the crowds, all the costumes and to hit all the different tracks and fan panels. The first couple of days are always a rush and full of excitement about being around your own kind. On the other hand, this would have been my 5th Dragon*Con, and part of me feels like it’s becoming old and routine, and that there isn’t much new to experience. Sure, there’s always something different to see, but the over all experience is still the same. Of course once I’m there, I’m sure all that would go out the window and it would again be an awesome and fun time.

Maybe it’s good that I’m taking a break from D*C this time. I’ll probably go back next year, but undecided at the moment.

I’m looking forward to being back in Edmonton again and seeing my friends. Hoping for an uneventful trip there and back, but given my recent past traveling history, not terribly optimistic.
