Time for a new camera

Next week I’m off to Providence, RI for the SIIM conference. I suppose if I want to get pictures of my adventures, I’d better go get a new camera soon. My ambitions for a digital SLR will have to wait for a little while.

I’m attracted to the Olylmpus SP-510 because of it’s feature set and similarity to my C-4000Z. Not all that enthusiastic about introducing yet another memory card format (xD Picture Card) to the collection though. The Canon Powershot A710 is another one I’m looking at, although I’ve read a lot of complaints about lousy battery life (but that’s to be expected when you’re only using 2 AA batteries).

Good excuse to make a trip out to Best Buy and Circuit City for some hands on investigation.

2007 NHC Hurricane forecast

The NHC‘s forecast for this year’s hurricane season came out today. Looks pretty similar to the forecast by the Tropical Meteorology people in Colorado. 13-17 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes and 3-5 strong hurricanes. It’ll be a busy season if the forecast is on track this year.

From the press release:

Experts at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center are projecting a 75 percent chance that the Atlantic Hurricane Season will be above normal this year–showing the ongoing active hurricane era remains strong.

“For the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, NOAA scientists predict 13 to 17 named storms, with seven to 10 becoming hurricanes, of which three to five could become major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. An average Atlantic hurricane season brings 11 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes, including two major hurricanes.

“There is some uncertainty this year as to whether or not La Niña will form, and if it does how strong it will be,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. “The Climate Prediction Center is indicating that La Niña could form in the next one to three months. If La Niña develops, storm activity will likely be in the upper end of the predicted range, or perhaps even higher depending on how strong La Niña becomes. Even if La Niña does not develop, the conditions associated with the ongoing active hurricane era still favor an above-normal season.”

Time to get the hurricane kit tuned up and restocked.

Bitter about gas prices?

Gas prices around here are about as high as I’ve ever seen them. A few of the cheap places that I drove by this weekend on James Island were selling regular for $3/gallon ($2.999/gal). Most were around $3.06/$3.07 per gallon.

If it makes anybody feel better, back home I hear gas is selling for $1.22/liter. Factoring in the exchange rate ($0.92 USD/Cdn this morning) that comes out to about $1.123/liter or $4.24/gal.

At that price, it would cost me an extra $15 to fill up my empty Camry.

I don’t think I’ll be making too many road trips this summer.

Time for a new camera

I managed to get most of the covers off the camera to have a look inside. i wanted to see if there was a way I could get the lens unstuck and avoid having to get a new camera.

There were about 8 teeny tiny screws that needed to be removed to access the inner guts. The lens assembly was all enclosed and attached to the main board, so there wasn’t anyway to access the mechanism and get it unstuck. Without any other moving parts to deal with, there wasn’t much else I could do to the camera without risking irreparable damage (i.e. not being able to get it back together), so I decided to put everything back together.

Apparently I put a screw into a place it didn’t belong because I ended up missing one of the screws for the outer panels, and I know it didn’t skitter off on me at all. So somewhere inside the camera there’s a tiny silver screw filling a spot that it doesn’t need to be in.

Have to start saving up for a new camera now I guess.

Food creativity

Ping Island Strike‘s latest photos are a big dewar of liquid nitrogen and large hunks of foie gras.

I wonder if they’re planning foie gras-sicles.

I have to go to McCrady’s more often. Any restaurant that has a dewar of LN in the kitchen just has to be an interesting place to eat.
