More star trails

An attempt to capture a 60 minute exposure of the northern sky failed because the battery died on me during the exposure. I should probably switch out to a fresh battery before each session.

After switching to the spare battery and letting the camera warm up a little bit, I captured this ~33 minute exposure (ISO 400, f/7.1) showing the stars circling around Polaris.

This one is another ~33 minute exposure with the aperture set to f/10. Makes the sky a little darker but the lower magnitude stars start disappearing. Now the camera’s been out long enough for condensation to become a problem again

Going to have to research some solutions for getting around the condensation issue. Had someone suggest a small battery powered fan which seems like a good idea.

The next technique I want to try is stacking multiple short exposures to produce a simulated long exposure. It’s supposed to be a good technique for controlling the amount of noise in the images.

Star trails

I left the camera sitting outside pointed north-ish for some long exposures last night.
This one was a 17.4 minute exposure, ISO 800, f/7.1 with the camera noise reduction turned on.

This one was a 30 miinute exposure, ISO 800, f/13 with the camera noise reduction turned off.

I tried a 60 minute exposure, but that one didn’t turn out because of condensation on the lens filter.

The night sky

Taking shots like these makes me want a tripod with a motorized star tracking mount. And a telescope with adapter to attach my camera to.

Help-Portrait 2011

Coming up on December 10 the 2011 Help-Portrait event. This will be my third Help-Portrait I’m helping out with, and like last year the Charleston Help-Portrait event is piggy-backing on the Charleston Convoy of Hope outreach event. This year there are four Convoy of Hope sites, and I’ve heard there will be a Help-Portrait set up at each of them. I’m planning to be at the Johns Island location, at Haute Gap charter school. Hopefully the weather will be better than it was last year.

On December 9, Joe Nienstedt has once again organized a Help-Portrait event at MUSC Children’s Hospital which I’m hoping to be a part of again. That will depend on what time the presentations for BioE 850 are supposed to take place. Hopefully it won’t be the same time as Help-Portrait. Last year it was a lot of fun to do.

What is Help-Portrait? Watch the video. It explains the idea pretty well.

Cupcake Camp Charleston photobooth

Jason Layne ran an interactive photobooth off in a side room at Cupcake Camp. It’s a rare occasion that I get captured on the other side of the camera, and even more rare that I do it voluntarily. It seemed like a fun thing to do and this is what happened.
