Supporting friends

Being the introvert that I am, my circle of friends is pretty small. I usually don’t meet too many people that I find compelling enough to come out of my shell to interact with willingly. I also don’t go out much, so actually getting to see my friends is usually a treat. So when the opportunity comes up to visit with one of them, like when she’s starting a new job, well heck I’m there.

Made the trek up to Summerville (which for me, is a bit of a drive) to see her in action on the first day of the new job. Always good to see friends, even if it is just in spurts. But hey, there was decent food, a good Guinness and other people to hang out with. A pretty good time.

TED2012 Susan Cain: The power of introverts

This was a good talk. I think I’ll have to check out her book.

Random Aquarium

Got to see the new ring tailed lemurs in their new enclosure at the SC Aquarium today. They’re pretty cool. The new Madagascar exhibit won’t be ready for a couple of months yet. The lemur enclosure is all done, but the rest of the exhibit is still being worked on. There are supposed to be a couple of vasa parrots coming too. I think the Madagascar exhibit is going to be pretty awesome.

The albino alligator was unusually active today. Most of the time when I see him he’s just hanging out towards the back or floating in the water not doing much of anything. Today he was moving around a lot more than I’ve ever seen him move before.

And then there was this turtle with his neck stretched waaay out.

Charleston Eats: Ted’s Butcherblock

This year, Ted added a charcuterie plate to the Friday night dinner lineup. It’s a plate of some of their house made sausages, pates, cheeses, olives, and other things. Yesterday’s plate included some curried pickled cauliflower, cornichons, salami, some kind of pistachio’d loaf and some sausage (I think) and toast points. All pretty tasty.

Galaxy S II + 2 months

Just about 2 months with my Galaxy S II and so far no major problems. Still an awesome phone. It’s already taken a few tumbles, but fortunately it’s been well protected by the case and screen protector, so no damage at all.

Battery life is pretty good, and I can get through pretty much the whole day on a single charge and still be over 50% battery. Heavy internet use or being stuck in an area with poor signal or data will suck the battery dry pretty quickly though. Spare batteries FTW.

It also doesn’t seem quite so big in my hand anymore now that I’ve been using it for a while.
One annoyance I’ve run into is that if you drain the battery low enough to trigger Power saving mode, all the things that Power saving mode turns off stay off. For example, display brightness goes to minimum and stays there. Sync turns off and stays off. Screen timeout goes to the shortest setting (15s) and stays there. So once you manage to get your phone charged back up, you need to go in and re-enable or reset things back to your preferred settings. It’s a somewhat minor annoyance until you start wondering why you’re not getting any email notifications, or why you can’t see the screen when you walk outside anymore. Then you realize the Auto-sync has been turned off and screen brightness has changed from auto to minimum.

The things that Power saving mode resets or disables can be changed, but if you start telling it not to disable things, it kind of defeats the purpose of Power saving mode.
