Help-Portrait Charleston: Help wanted

Had a great first meeting this evening with other people interested in participating in the Charleston Help-Portrait project. There were many things discussed, including the kind of gear to bring, number of people we’d need, work flow and most importantly, how we’re going to print the photos.

Printing the photos is where we’re going to need a lot of help. We’ve got printers, so we need the supplies like ink cartridges and photo paper to print on. The group decided on printing 5″x7″ photos, but if we could manage it I think it would be really great if we could give people 8″x10″ photos. Whether we can do that or not will depend on the supplies we get.
The most important thing though is that we be able to give people their photos soon after their pictures is taken. To do that, we need the supplies: ink cartridges, photo paper and folders or envelopes to put the photos in. We could also use backdrops and one or two of those big 10×10′ tents to keep the sun/rain off us. If you have hair/makeup skills, we can use those too! If you know anybody that can help us out with this, drop me a line or better yet, join the group and drop everybody a line.

This video from a Help-Portrait event in Dallas a few weeks ago is a great example of what it’s all about.

Here’s another video from a test event in Nashville. This is the kind of thing we want to accomplish here in Charleston.

A dog and her ears

Nala’s always had problems with gooey, yeasty ears and ear infections that flare up from time to time, but the past couple of weeks her ears have been particularly gooey. They’re starting to clear up after a good flushing at the vet last week and treatment with Zymox.
A lot of things can cause chronic yeast infections in dogs and Nala has several of those working against her (loves water, floppy ears and slightly narrower ear canals than normal). They can also often a symptom of a food allergy or sensitivity, so to cover that possibility Nala’s being switched to Nature’s Logic Lamb for a while. It’s still lamb (she’s on California Natural Lamb & Rice now), but switches the carbohydrate component to millet. We’ll see how she does on that for a little while. Simba will stay on the CN L&R, because he’s still doing fine on it and there’s no reason to switch him.

Waddle Wagon

Today the SC Aquarium kicked off a new penguin program, the Waddle Wagon. It’s a spiffy little wagon that lets the penguins get out of the Penguin Planet enclosure and into the Aquarium amongst all their adoring fans. Only one or two of the penguins will be in it at a time. Penguin 138 (the youngest one) got to ride in it today.

At the moment, it’s going to be an afternoon program, that will happen at 1:30PM, just before the regular 2PM show and feeding.

There was a pretty decent sized crowd today for being the weekend after Thanksgiving, and everybody seemed pretty excited to get up close to a penguin.
