Charleston RadioShack closings

After my RadioShack on Folly Road closed, the next closest one was further away over on Sam Rittenberg. Stopped by there on Friday and discovered that one had closed in advance of RadioShack’s bankruptcy announcement. Signs on the window point you to the nearest RadioShack over in Mt. Pleasant.

Made the trip out to that location Friday evening to find a reasonably well stocked store (probably full of stuff from the other store), but no sale or clearance items other than RC toys.

According to this list I found via a Twitter posting, the only two stores in the immediate vicinity slated for closing (this round anyway) are located near Tanger Mall and Northwoods Mall (surprised that one is still open considering the one at Citadel Mall closed long ago).

That leaves three stores (Mt. Pleasant, Goose Creek, and Summerville) that may become Sprint stores with an embedded RadioShack or which may eventually go away altogether. The one store up in Summerville (Hurricane Electronics/RadioShack) I believe is a franchise store and would probably (hopefully) stay, probably dropping the RadioShack part.

My Radio Shack closed :(

My Radio Shack on Folly Road fell victim to the store closings announced by Radio Shack earlier this year. The closing was a surprise, because I had stopped in there a few days ago and there was no indication of anything amiss.

Stopped by there yesterday to pick up something I had been thinking about, and saw the sign saying the store had closed, and some bigger signs giving the location of two other Radio Shack locations. There were a number of people in the store scurrying about taking inventory or something like that.

Now instead of being 5 minutes away, the nearest Radio Shack now is significantly less convenient to get to.

The closing makes me very sad.

Radio Shack deals for builders/makers

If you happen to be near your neighbourhood Radio Shack, stop in and you might find some good clearance deals. Look for the items with blue or tan on the price tags.

I stopped in today to look for an audio transformer to build a sound card interface for the radio, and ended up coming out with a couple pieces of 4.5×6″ perfboard, a resistor component pack, and a capacitor component pack that were on clearance. The perfboard was less than $1.50 each, and the resistor and capacitor component packs were $7 and $6 respectively. The component packs are normally in the $25 range I think. Although I’ve already got plenty of resistors and capacitors, it was really the boxes that I wanted. I think of it as a two good component boxes that come with free resistors/capacitors.

My store also had a few Arduino shields that were clearance marked as well.

Might have to pay a visit to some of the other Radio Shacks in the area.
