Simba: Thief

Simba’s become quite the stealthy thief lately. I’ve been finding him with socks pinched from the laundry pile (just socks…nothing else), pieces of paper from the recycling bin and little wads of tissue from the trash. Today he even grabbed a stuffed squeaky toy out of the toy box. One minute he’s there gnawing on a Nylabone, the next minute he’s coming back with a sock in his mouth or walking around with his mouth closed. That automatically triggers an alarm because unless he’s sleeping, he’s almost always walking around with his mouth open and tongue hanging out looking like a jolly happy fellow. So when he comes back with his mouth closed, it’s time to go digging to see what he’s gotten into.
He’s very sneaky about it too. I think he knows when he’s got something he shouldn’t have because he’s always very quite about it. When he’s got his bone or Kong, he’s very noisy, picking it up, dropping it, tossing it at my feet telling me to throw it, whatever. When he’s got something he’s not supposed to have, not a peep.
Gotta keep the eyes peeled when the little guy’s out and about.

Happy New Year!

Simba, Nala and the rest of us want to wish every one a Happy New Year and the best of everything for 2007!

Simba and the barking clock

Yesterday we went out to see Eragon (not a bad movie, probably more on it later) and then stopped by Marion Square just in time to see the fireworks go off. Nice little show, and the closest we’d been to fireworks for a long time. Lots of people milling about enjoying the lights and the concert going on just beforehand. Then it was a quick stroll down King St to see what people were up to (Mellow Mushroom seemed to be having a big to-do going on). Then it was back home for a quiet New Year’s ring-in with some mandatory rice, collards and black-eyed peas, which the wife says are supposed to bring good luck for the year.

It’s 20°C this morning and the rain looks like it’s going to stay away long enough for us to make our traditional New Year’s beach walk. See you later with pictures from Folly.

Christmas greetings

The dogs would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday filled with lots of treats, biscuits and chew toys.

Simba’s got a bad knee

Did you know in dogs the knee joint called the stifle?
Yesterday we noticed Simba was favouring his back right leg a little more than usual and not putting much weight on it. It was something we noticed a few times at the park a few weeks back, but he never did it consistently enough to make us think it was much of a problem. Yesterday he was doing it a lot more, so it was off to the vet to check it out. Fortunately they weren’t too busy so it didn’t take too long.
The vet clinic isn’t one of Simba’s favourite places (oddly enough Nala loves going to the vet) so he was pretty mellow. The vet moved his leg around, poked, prodded and pulled and had some x-rays taken. He said all the joints seemed pretty stable, but he did feel a little bit of clicking when the stifle/knee was manipulated. He thinks Simba may possibly have partially torn or injured his ACL and that the clicking in the knee might be a result of some collateral damage to the cartilage.
So now Simba’s restricted to just going out on the leash (no more dog park for a little while) and some Rimadyl to help with any inflammation on days he seems to be limping more. The vet also recommended adding some glucosamine supplements to his diet to help with the joint problem.
Hopefully he heals up well, but it’s going to take a while. We’ll keep a close eye on him for the next month or so and then follow up with the vet if we don’t see much improvement.
