Where the spices are

I was watching the Good Eats fruitcake episode last night which features a segment where he visits a spice shop. So it got me thinking: with all the variety of cuisine and the long culinary tradition in Charleston, why isn’t there a decent spice shop around? And if there is, why haven’t I found it yet?
So what’s up? Where, besides the local grocery store, are you supposed to go for good quality spices and people who know what they’re selling?

  1. The best place that I’ve seen (overall) is Whole Foods. I try to avoid the place (where grocery shopping resembles a car payment) – but they have alot of bulk spices already packaged that are pretty decent. It’s the best selection that I’ve seen around here.

  2. Whole Foods is good but I’ve browsed around the Asian Market in a strip mall on Rivers at Remount in North Charleston and they seemed well informed.
Downtown on East Bay near Calhoun, Saffron Restaurant has a surprising array and on the other side of East Bay, wander into Ted’s Butcher Shop.
    Happy hunting!
