The Dog Food Project

Came across The Dog Food Project via a comment left on a past entry where I was talking about the food issues I was having with Nala a while back.
After going through a bunch of pages, I’m impressed with the quality of information on the site. With all the dog food recalls in the news lately, there are a lot of people struggling with what to feed their dogs, lots of rabid BARF/RAW advocates pushing raw feeding as the only real food choice and generally a lot of confusion.
There are several pages that talk about and define the various ingredients you’ll find listed in dog foods, what ingredients to look for and what to avoid and common dog food misconceptions.
There’s a lot of good information on the site, without pushing any particular feeding method. It should be a good read for any pet owners out there who want to know what they’re feeding their pets.

  1. Eugene – thanks for the link, it seems like a good spot to keep up with the latest press releases. Looks like there’s a whole slew of info about overall dog diets.
One thing you might find useful is a report we put together about the dog food recall – I’ve got a site too, and was getting a ton of questions about this mess. So our top writer put up a huge report that answered the questions coming in. Stuff like: how the problem started, what to do if your dog ate tainted food, which brands are recalled, etc.
Hopefully you’ll find it useful. Thanks.

  2. This is pretty interesting. I tried to get my dogs eating natural dog food, but I couldn’t get them to switch over. Funny, isn’t it, that they like the chemical laden stuff so much.
One thing I find interesting that I’ve been reading about is the relationship between pet food and allergies. It seems to relate most to the chemical, processed food. I think the natural kibbles are okay. And the vet who wrote the book I was reading said that when he suggested his clients switch to cooking dog-specific recipes for their pets, the allergies cleared up. These weren’t raw/BARF diets, he actually said that wasn’t preferable as far as a dog’s health goes.
Thanks for the tip about the site!

  3. Thanks for posting this. I’m into homemade dog food myself, in a big way. I make Rudy (my lab) fresh food every tow days (I put it in the fridge). For many recipes you can use left-overs from “human” food and make real treats for your dog…
