A tale of Three Crowns

Crown Royal Original, Black and Reserve

Three bottles of Crown Royal. The left bottle is regular Crown Royal with the distinctive purple bag. In the middle is a bottle of Crown Royal Black with a black bag. On the right is a bottle of Crown Royal Reserve with a gold bag.

I’ve never been a huge drinker, but the bottles of CR Black and Reserve were just calling out to me at the duty free liquor store on the ship, so I figured “What the heck”. It is, after all, the nectar of Hoo.

Some time soon, I’ll do a side-by-side taste test and see what my not so discerning palate thinks about these three varieties of CR. I’m really interested in seeing how Black and Reserve compare to the original.

T-7 months

At some point about a year or so ago, I started following Connie/NR4CB on Twitter. Not long after that, I discovered she was a math geek, and also a licensed ham radio operator. I also learned she was one of Heather‘s friends and also the godmother of her kids.

Hey, I like math, and I’ve been interested in learning more about ham radio. This made Connie instantly more interesting, so we started talking more on Twitter.

We made plans to meet up at the Atlanta Hamfest, because it wasn’t all that far away and it was a good opportunity to meet up in person before she got to the Charleston part of her road trip.

The meeting at the hamfest went well. We were very comfortable being around each other and just hanging out together. We soon became a thing, Connie finished her road trip, and moved to Charleston.

Being the introvert that I am, there aren’t very many people I want to be around for any length of time. With Connie, there’s never any time I don’t want to be around her. It’s a very different feeling, but one that I enjoy.

Over the past 5 months, we’ve become best friends, great partners and a really good team. There’s plenty of love, and just as important, we really like being around each other (no small thing for a pair of introverts).

Now, in 7 months, we’re going to get married.

Nothing big or flashy. Just a small event with the people we really want to be there. A small, low profile ceremony, and then spending the rest of our time together.

There goes the TV

After 11 years, the TV has finally died. First it started off with the vertical sync messing up. Turn the TV off for a bit, then it went back to normal. Over a period of a few weeks, the time interval between the TV messing up went down and the length of time I’d have to keep it off to fix went up. The picture is just one very bright flat line across the middle of the screen now.

Time for that technology refresh I’ve been wanting to do.

Of course now I want to take it into the workshop and do an autopsy on the TV to see if there’s anything interesting I can do to it. This seems like it should be an easy problem to fix. Just need to figure out how to fix it and where to apply the fix for this particular TV, which will mean trying to find some schematics for it. I’ll also need to clear off most of the workbench to make room for the TV.

If nothing else, it will be fun to poke around the inside and see what the innards look like.

Star Trek: TNG Season 2 theater event

Hey look! A non-ham radio entry!
Another season of ST:TNG is coming out on Blu-ray, and yesterday was a theatrical event to mark the release, just like for Season 1. Made the trek (pun intended) up to Summerville to join Erika and CAST to watch Q Who and The Measure of a Man on the big screen in HD.
Yeah, I wore my Star Trek robe.
Both were good episodes for the season, although the picture seemed kind of on the dark side. Maybe it was just the way it was projected. Borg cube looked pretty cool in HD, but it didn’t look like the episode got any extra CG treatment like what was done for DataLore in the first season. Measure of a Man featured an extra 13 minutes of previously unreleased scenes. I was able to spot a few of them but I don’t think any of them really added much to the overall story. The extended fencing scene was kind of cool though.
Also got to see some of the blooper reel, and part of the 25th anniversary cast reunion interview from the 2012 Calgary Comic Expo.
Looking forward to adding Season 2 to the collection (I should probably think about getting a Blu-ray player or something). Season 3 looks like it should be pretty awesome too. Hopefully there will be another similar event for the Season 3 Blu-ray release.

New office mates

A few weeks ago when Connie and I were in Tennessee sorting through stuff, I came across these funny little Dilbert and PHB heads.

Being a Dilbert fan, I thought they were pretty neat. Stuffed Dilbert/PHB heads with a weighted base (figured it was just to help them stay upright), I decided I probably didn’t need more stuff so they were headed to the garage sale pile. While I was playing around with it, I tossed one up in the air and when it landed on my hand, it spoke!
Then I decided that I needed to keep them. I finally remembered to bring them in to the office with me so now they’ve joined the rest of the office crew

Who do you share your office with?
