Missy in the house

I haven’t done any dog fostering since Sazy. I figured with school I just wasn’t going to have time to put into fostering anymore, so I had the foster people at WHLR put me on the emergency/short term foster list.
This weekend I’ve got Missy crashing with us while her foster parents are away for the long weekend. She’s a pretty sweet dog and Simba just can’t seem to get enough of playing with her. She loves to give kisses and having attention lavished on her.

Missy is an outgoing and friendly gal who is around 2.5 years old. She LOVES to play with people and other dogs. Missy is great at fetching her tennis ball and will bring it back, drop it at your feet and get ready for another throw! She is crate and house trained, gets along with most other dogs (she’s a bit too annoying for grumpy, older dogs or dominant females), loves children, and going for walks and rides in the car. Missy is a fun, playful, BUSY girl who will make any active, dog friendly family a perfect partner.

Procter and Gamble buys NaturaPet

Just learned today that Procter and Gamble have a deal in place to purchase NaturaPet, the company that makes the California Natural Lamb & Rice (among others) that the dogs eat.

This news has caused a considerable amount of consternation among a subset of pet owners that really pay attention to what they feed their pets. P&G doesn’t really have a good reputation among this group anyway (animal testing) and among their pet food lines are Iams and Eukanuba. They’re ok foods, but generally don’t get a lot of respect from this group.

I’m still on the fence on this. Don’t really have any beef against P&G, and I can’t see them spending all that money to get into the high end pet food market just to turn it into crap. I’ll definitely keep a closer eye on the dogs though.

Dog TCO: 5 years

With Nala turning 5 and Simba turning 4, I figured an update to my previous Dog TCO post was in order. Here’s the breakdown from 1-Jan-2005 through today.

Pie chart of dog total cost of ownership after 5 years

In case you haven’t bothered to click on the graph for the large version, some of the bigger chunks are food in blue (22%), vet in light green (17%), pet supplies in burgundy (20%), meds in green (10%), kennel expenses in yellow (13%) and other (11%).

There hasn’t really been too much change from the last analysis in the way expenses are distributed. Food, supplies and vet expenses continue to be the biggest chunks of the pie at 22%, 20% and 17% respectively. The total for the past 5 years (2005-2009) is just over $22 300, or about $4 460/year.

I typically don’t skimp too much when it comes to the dogs, so I probably spend a little more than most people do. They’re worth it though.
