Setting personal records

According to Runkeeper, I finished today’s 5.1 km run in 27.6 minutes, a (current) PR! Still about 10 minutes slower than what I used to do in high school, but that was a lot of years ago and I don’t think I’ll be running that fast anymore.

Today’s run felt pretty good, and the pace didn’t feel as fast as it was. I set out with a goal of finishing the 5 km in around 29 minutes so shaving almost a minute and a half off that was a nice surprise.

I think by i5k time, i might be able to get close to 25 minutes.

Running faster

After a big November/December running lull (thanks to school) I’ve been trying to make sure I get out at least 2-3 times a week now. Signing up for the i5k (happening in a couple of months) has added a little more motivation.

On the good front, my “comfortable” running pace has gone down from 6:30 min/km to around 6 min/km and I can run a sub-30 minute 5k with a lot less effort than before. I think I should be able to shave 10-15 seconds off that comfort pace pretty easily by the time the i5k rolls around.

I think in a couple more weeks I’ll be ready to increase the distance of my long runs.

A non-stop 5k!

Decided to head out for an early morning run today. It was a little on the cool side, around 10°C or so I think, so getting started was a little rough. Felt pretty good once I got going though.

The out-and-back from the house up to the main road just happens to be pretty close to 1.5 miles and doing it twice is just a hair over 5k. And that’s what I did today, without any stops. According to RunKeeper it was 5.1 km in a little bit under 32 minutes. Kept it at a slightly slower pace but after I finished, I felt like I could have pretty easily done it at a faster pace and done it in under 30 minutes. Next time.

With “winter” coming, I’m going to have to get some new gear for the cooler weather.

Track runs

Been doing most of my running on the track lately, about 2-3 times a week. Used too be really hard to get started, but now it’s feeling easier. Endurance isn’t great yet, but I’m able to run at a faster pace than I was a few weeks ago.

Yesterday was just over 15 minutes on the short track at the Wellness center. On a 267m track, 15 minutes feels like a really long time. According to RunKeeper on my Cliq, the distance was right around 3km.

Run felt pretty good, and I probably could have gone a few more laps. Wanted to save some energy for the weight room though.

I’m going to have to start moving my runs off the track and onto the roads soon.
Sub-30 5km, here I come!

Interval work on the track

Legs are still sore from Monday’s leg workout. Was going to take another day off from running, but after walking a lap around the track the legs felt like they wanted to run. I decided to try some interval work. One lap at a fast 6-7 minute/mile pace and one lap walking. Did that for about a total of 2 miles.

It’s been a long long time since I’ve done any interval work (probably since my high school track days) but it felt good to stretch the legs out and run fast, even thought I can’t keep it up for very long.
