Charleston Eats: Sunae’s Korean and Japanese Hibachi Grill

Stopped in to check out the relatively new Korean/Japanese restaurant that opened up on Johns Island in what used to be a fried chicken joint. It’s a very unassuming place and doesn’t look like much. The food was very good though. The bibimbop bowl was hot and very tasty with a spicy red hot sauce you can have on the dish or on the side.

The beef bulgogi was pretty good, flavourful but a little bit on the dry side and lacking a bit in colour.

The usual side dishes that accompany many Korean side dishes (banchan) were very good as well.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area, and nice to see a little more diversity coming to the Johns Island eating scene.

Dim sum food truck

I’ve often lamented about the lack of dim sum in Charleston, which considering the number of Chinese and Asian restaurants in the area, has always seemed to be a significant oversight.

Maybe that will change a little bit soon. During one of my quasi-regular visits to the Charleston Kickstarter page, I saw one for a dim sum food truck. Dim Sum Good Dumplings (DSGD) and a guy named Chad Moore is behind the effort. A little bit of a different take on dim sum, and one I would love to see succeed.

From the project status updates he’s been posting, it looks very promising. Hopefully he doesn’t get too creative trying to put a “Southern spin” on his creations.

Charleston Eats: Little Star of the Caribbean Food Truck

Got to sample a beef empanada from Little Star of the Caribbean when they made a stop at MUSC today. Pretty tasty little snack.

Charleston Eats: Cory’s Grilled Cheese

Cory’s Grilled Cheese has been open for a few weeks now in the spot that formerly housed one of my regular eating joints, Great American Grill. Finally got around to stopping there for an early lunch today.

The menu offers a selection of several grilled cheese sandwich variants, or you can build your own from the wide variety of options. Since I’ve already sampled the grilled cheese sammich, I opted to try the burger. The standard burger comes with lettuce, tomatoes and onion. From there you can add whatever extra toppings you like. I ordered mine with cheddar and bacon.

CorysGrilledCheese_Burger.jpgWhen the burger came out they’d forgotten to add the bacon, but that was easily fixed. Not mentioned on the menu is the fact that their burgers come with two patties, and cheese on each one. Not bad for $4. The two patties makes the burger pretty substantial and with a big basket of fries, it’s a pretty good deal.

While it’s probably not going to be the greatest burger you’ve ever had, I enjoyed it and found it quite satisfying. Simple, basic and tasty, just like the rest of the menu.

Mason jar cold brew coffee

I’ve been experimenting with cold-brew coffee and have come up with something that I like. If you have a source of freshly roasted coffee beans (as in still warm from the roaster), all the better. I’ve only tried this starting with whole beans rather than pre-ground. YMMV.

  • 60-65 g of your favourite whole bean coffee
  • 1 quart sized mason jar
  • water

Grind the coffee beans and put them into the mason jar. The ground coffee usually ends up taking up about 1/3 of the jar.

FIll with water and put the lid on (not too tightly) and shake lightly to mix. The grounds will float up at the top for a while, but eventually will sink down to the bottom of the jar. Leave it in the fridge 1-2 days, but at least 8 hours or overnight. Give it a shake every now and then.

After a day or two, strain out the grounds. I use my coffee maker for this. Place a filter into the bowl like you normally would, and pour the coffee in. Most of the grounds will stay in the jar, which is a good thing. Let the coffee drip through into a coffee pot or some other suitable container.

Pour over ice and enjoy. You can drink it straight up, or dilute it a bit. I like to use chocolate milk in mine.
